Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I just uploaded my combat log but nothing showed up! This website sucks!

A: Yikes! Before you storm off, please check a few things. First, be sure your combat log is a relatively recent log. We are able to parse the more recent forms so if your log is fairly old, try to feed the parser something newer. Second, be sure that at least one of your encounters is longer than 30 seconds, because we have been filtering the short ones out. The quick answer for why we do this is that we believe our website will be most useful for fights that last longer and may require some degree of resource management.

Q: I think it’d be great if you could show us our hit points throughout the battle.

A: We think that’d be great too…if Bioware actually gave us that information in the logs. If this changes, we’ll definitely implement it because it would certainly help better understand, say, the healing aspect (e.g., overheals) of a fight.

Q: What other features are you looking to implement in the future?

A: The following is a list, in no particular order, of features we’ve started thinking about or working on. This is by no means an exhaustive list.

  • Group member comparisons in the same fight.
  • Easily understood logs
  • Sources of damage, heals, etc.
  • Account creation to organize and manage your logs

Q: What kind of smoothing are you applying to your graphs?

A: Nerd. If you must know, we’re using a moving average weighted by a Blackman window (width of 11 seconds). Why a Blackman? It was sort of an arbitrary decision, mostly guided by the desire to get a window that looked as Gaussian as possible (a Gaussian window wasn’t an option, strangely) in order to put more weight on the points the smoothing is centered about. We tried a few other options and felt the parameters we fed the Blackman window smoothing gave us an informative and well-fit trend line.

Q: Who are you guys?

A: Just three SWTOR fans who wanted to improve their game using their fields of expertise (i.e., programming and statistics).

Q: I want to tell you you’re awesome! How can I get in contact with you guys?

A: Shoot us an email at support@fryingtime.com. Feel free to give us any suggestions or feedback as well! Tell us what type of information would help you!
